Who is CANGO?

CANGO is an acronym which stands for the Coordinating Assembly of Non Governmental Organisations. This organization was founded in 1983 initially as a Coordinating Secretariat for NGOs involved in the promotion of primary health care under the name: The Coordinating Assembly of Non Governmental Organisations in Primary Health Care. This was in response to an appeal from the Ministry of Health for better coordination of Primary Health Care activities in pursuit of the universal goal of Health for all by the year 2000. In 1987, the constitution was amended to enable this organization to encompass all NGOs in development, thus becoming a true National Umbrella body for all NGOs.

CANGO has developed into quite a strong Secretariat with an increased capacity. Tasks have also increased in accordance with the demands of member NGOs. The Secretariat based in Mbabane is led by a Director and is governed by an elected board which meets at least once a year. The Annual General Assembly is it's highest policy making body. In 2001, CANGO embraced a strategic shift to play a key role in influencing the poverty environment in Swaziland.
