CANGO is an umbrella organization of over 70 Non Governmental Organizations in Swaziland. This organization was founded in 1983 initially as a Coordinating Secretariat for NGOs involved in the promotion of primary health care under the name: The Coordinating Assembly of Non Governmental Organizations in Primary Health Care. In 1987, the constitution was amended to enable this organization to encompass all NGOs in development, thus becoming a true National Umbrella body for all NGOs. More than ten years since its formation, CANGO has developed into quite a strong Secretariat with an increased capacity. Tasks have also increased in accordance with the demands of member NGOs. In 2001, CANGO embraced a strategic shift to play a key role in influencing the poverty environment in Swaziland. Current programmes are geared towards building the capacity of civil society to engage policy.
